How I Turned Two Free Curbside Nightstands Into a Stunning Bedroom Makeover
Learn how two free curbside nightstands became a stunning bedroom makeover with paint, stain, and DIY furniture transformation tips.

I have been searching for the perfect pair of solid wood nightstands for almost two years. Too hard to find. Too expensive when I do find them. So when I spotted two just sitting on the curb with a free sign on a random Tuesday, I pulled over so fast. This DIY nightstand makeover has been living in my head for a while — and I am so glad I finally got to bring it to life.
The Curbside Find That Sparked Everything
Honestly, most people drove right past these. And I get it — at first glance, they looked pretty rough. Batwing hardware, a dated curved base, scratched-up tops, and a finish that had clearly seen better days. But underneath all of that? Solid wood. And solid wood is always worth the effort. Once I saw the bones, I knew exactly what these could become: a warm, modern, organic-feeling bedroom set that fits perfectly with the cozy bedroom decor ideas I’ve been drawn to lately.
Cleaning and Assessing Your Thrifted Furniture Find
Before you do anything else on a furniture makeover, clean it thoroughly. I use Simple Green for this step because it cuts through years of furniture polish and product buildup — and if that residue stays on the surface, your paint won’t adhere properly. After cleaning, take a good honest look at what you’re working with. For these nightstands, I noted the batwing hardware had to go, the curved bottom detail needed to be trimmed for a more modern profile, and the drawer faces needed some love. The tops had nicks and scratches, but nothing that prep work couldn’t fix.

Prep Work — The Foundation of Any Great Furniture Makeover
Here’s the truth about painted furniture makeovers: the prep is where the magic actually happens. To remove the old finish, I used acetone with a chip brush — just make sure you have your respirator, gloves, goggles, and good ventilation before you start. Next, I filled all the old hardware holes with Bondo since the spacing wasn’t going to work with new hardware. Additionally, I used a jigsaw to trim off that dated curved base detail. This instantly gave the silhouette a cleaner, more modern look. From there, I scuff sanded everything. I used my SurfPrep with a 120-grit pad for the curves and edges, and my orbital sander for the tops.
How to Choose the Perfect Paint Color for Your Bedroom Furniture
This is the question I get more than any other — how do you know what color to choose? For these nightstands, I pulled out the new Sherwin Williams Premier Collection deck and spent some time in their “Form and Function” neutrals section. I wanted something warm, earthy, and calming — something that would fit the organic bedroom decor aesthetic that’s everywhere right now. I landed on Tanglewood, and it is exactly what I pictured. It’s that perfect mushroom-warm neutral that pairs beautifully with natural wood tones. If you struggle with color selection, I actually just released an ebook that walks you through my whole process — link is in the description!

Painting, Staining, and the Finishing Touches
First, I protected the base with painters tape and plastic wrap, then laid down two coats of bonding primer in a gray tint. This is non-negotiable when you’re painting over a red mahogany finish, or it will bleed right through your color. Once dry, I loaded Tanglewood into my HVLP sprayer. No fancy sprayer? A Wagner works beautifully and is super budget-friendly — I’ll link mine below. After a light scuff sand between coats, I moved on to the stained base. I did a two-tone stain technique: dark walnut from Varathane as the base layer. Then toned it down with a white oak blend I found on Pinterest to get that warm, coffee-colored wood finish. Finally, I lined the drawers with a peel-and-stick wallpaper from Amazon that matched almost perfectly — such a sweet little detail that makes opening a drawer feel special.
