This entire china cabinet cost me only $12 at an estate sale. Nobody bid on it, so it was practically left behind.

First, everything had to come apart.
I removed:
- The outdated hardware
- The glass panels
- The plastic trim pieces
- And the back panel of the cabinet
Meanwhile, I carefully labeled every piece of glass so I’d know exactly where everything went during reassembly. Trust me—future you will thank you for this step.
Once disassembled, I discovered the original maker’s mark: Thomasville furniture, dated April 1982. Honestly, that timeline fits the style perfectly.
Next came the prep work. I gave the entire DIY hutch top a thorough scuff sand using:
This helped smooth the surface while preserving all the beautiful curves and details.
After that, it was time for paint.
For this project, I chose:
- Sherwin-Williams Emerald Trim Enamel
- Color: Caviar (a rich black with subtle blue undertones)
This is one of my favorite furniture paints because:
- It has a built-in primer
- It has a built-in top coat
- And it sprays beautifully with an HVLP sprayer
That means fewer steps… and more profit.
The Design Details That Made This Hutch Top Look High-End
Now, this is where the transformation really happened.
Instead of leaving the back plain, I added:
* Peel-and-stick wallpaper leftover from another project
* A custom wood base
* Rich stained cross beams inspired by Pinterest trends
These details completely changed the look from:

* modern luxury statement piece
Meanwhile, the base alone dramatically increased the value.
I built the base using:
- 1×4 lumber
- Pocket holes with my Kreg Jig
- A custom stain finish in Aged Oak gel stain
The contrast between the:
- dark black paint
- warm stained wood
- and textured wallpaper
…made this piece feel custom and designer-inspired.
